Samsung has confirmed its next Galaxy Unpacked for July 22 in London, where the Galaxy Z Fold8 (Ultra and Wide) and the Z Flip8 are expected. The most recent leaks from PhoneArena and Tom’s Guide point to news nobody will like: a price hike. If you’re thinking about a foldable, this changes the math — and not necessarily in favor of waiting for the new model.
What to expect from Unpacked (and why it’ll cost more)
According to the leaks circulating these weeks:
- Z Fold8 Ultra: a 200 MP main camera, up to 16 GB of RAM, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, a ~14% bigger battery and a redesigned hinge to reduce the crease. Rumored price from around $1,999 up to over $2,700 in the 1 TB version — several hundred dollars above the current Fold7.
- Z Flip8: it would keep the Flip7’s screen sizes (6.9” inner, 4.1” cover) with an equally redesigned hinge. Rumors mention a starting price higher than the Flip7’s $1,099.
Note: these are leaks, not official specs — Samsung will confirm them on July 22. But the pattern (polished hinge, slightly better camera, higher price) is the same as every recent generation.
The Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 are already genuinely discounted
Meanwhile, the Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 —launched barely a year ago— are at their best price ever. In the US, Samsung itself cut $500 off all Fold7 configurations right before the event, per 9to5Toys — the clearest sign the generational changeover has already started. It’s the usual pattern: the outgoing generation gets steeply cheaper in the weeks before Unpacked, while the new model arrives pricier than ever.

- Z Fold7 → if you use your phone for real work. An almost-8” inner display to split apps, take notes or edit documents; it’s the most well-rounded tablet-phone Samsung has made. The Fold8 will add some camera and a flatter hinge, but day to day —multitasking, S Pen, DeX— will be practically identical.
- Z Flip7 → if you prioritize design and pocketability, without sacrificing screen. Its 4.1” cover already handles notifications, camera and widgets without opening the phone. The Flip8 wouldn’t bring a size jump, just a different hinge and price.
- If your priority is a top-tier camera or you want the newest model possible, then it does make sense to wait until July 22 and compare final specs before deciding.
The honest downside: the Fold7/Flip7 don’t have the “almost invisible” hinge the Fold8/Flip8 promises, and in a year they’ll be one step behind in software support. But paying several hundred dollars less for an equivalent daily experience is, for most, the best deal.

On a foldable, a case with hinge protection isn’t optional: it keeps dust and sand from scratching the ultra-thin inner glass. It’s the $20-30 purchase that protects a $1,000+ one.
