Why 128GB nearly disappeared from flagships

The iPhone 17 launched starting at 256GB (~$799), with the jump to 512GB costing ~$200 more; the iPhone 17 Pro follows the same pattern. Samsung made the same move with the Galaxy S26 and S26+: both also start at 256GB, with no 128GB option left in the lineup. It’s not a cosmetic change — several industry analyses point to on-device AI (Apple Intelligence, Gemini Nano) as a growing chunk of system storage that, combined with the rest of the software, left too little real headroom on 128GB.

How much your files actually take up

The number on the spec sheet is “as shipped”: the operating system, preinstalled apps, and — since 2025 — on-device AI models already eat 15–30GB before you install a single app of your own. From there, here’s what actually fills a phone up:

Uploading photos and video to the cloud frees up local space, but it isn’t free past a certain point: both iCloud+ and Google One charge ~$2.99/month for 200GB and ~$9.99/month for 2TB — the two are priced almost identically in 2026. It’s a real alternative to paying ~$200 more for a bigger storage tier on the phone itself, but it’s a recurring cost, not a one-time one, and you need a decent connection for the backup to actually keep up.

128GB, 256GB, or more? It depends on where you’re shopping

  • Buying an Apple or Samsung flagship in 2026: you no longer choose — the floor is 256GB. The real decision is whether 512GB is worth the extra cost, and that only makes sense if you shoot 4K/8K often or don’t plan on using the cloud.
  • Buying mid-range (Xiaomi Redmi/Poco, Motorola Moto G, Galaxy A): 128GB is still the base option on several models. Pick 128GB if you already back up to the cloud and don’t record much video; go up to 256GB if you install heavy games, shoot often, or would simply rather never think about managing space.
  • A common mistake: paying extra for 512GB “just in case” when your actual usage — checked under Settings → Storage — shows you’re not even halfway through 128GB. Check your real usage before paying for headroom you won’t use.
