iPhone Duo: $1,999, or a Cheaper Galaxy Z Fold8?

iPhone Duo pre-orders open today (ships Oct 23). We compare it with the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Pixel 10 Pro Fold on weight, camera, durability and price.

Today, October 16, Apple opened pre-orders for the iPhone Duo, its first foldable: $1,999 for 256 GB, arriving October 23. The short answer: if you already live in iOS and want the foldable with the best screen and water resistance, it’s the one that makes sense; if weight, a telephoto lens or price matter more, a Galaxy Z Fold8 or Pixel 10 Pro Fold gives you more for less.

iPhone Duo — the crease is nearly gone, the weight isn’t

Why it’s the best (for iPhone users): a 7.6” inner and 5.4” outer display, both 120 Hz, with a nano-texture finish inside to cut glare. It runs the A20 Pro, is IP68 rated, and Apple claims up to 44 hours of video on the outer screen and 31 on the inner one. Early hands-ons from Tom’s Guide and TechRadar agree the crease is barely noticeable.

Cons: it weighs 254 g (the Fold8 is around 201 g), has only two 48 MP cameras with no telephoto, and starts at $1,999. These are first-look impressions: how the hinge holds up after months is unknown, and one Cult of Mac report says deliveries already slipped to mid-November (unconfirmed).

Galaxy Z Fold8 — thinner, lighter and in stores now

Why: about 4.5 mm open and ~201 g, the usual Android ecosystem, and three apps on screen at once. List price is $1,899.99 and it has been seen at ~$1,649.99, but discounts change: check the current price.

Cons: IP48 (protected against larger dust, not immersion) and a dual 50 MP camera, also without a telephoto.

Pixel 10 Pro Fold — IP68 and the cheapest option

Why: it was the first foldable with IP68, has a triple camera with 5x telephoto, and lists at $1,799, with occasional event discounts (it hit ~$1,399 on June’s Prime Day per Android Authority and PhoneArena). Cons: it’s the 2025 generation, so its Tensor G5 chip and ~5,015 mAh battery will age sooner than the other two.

How to decide based on what you own

  • Coming from an iPhone and using iMessage/AirDrop: the Duo. Switching ecosystems for a foldable usually costs more than it looks.
  • Coming from Android and want a foldable now: Fold8 or Pixel; no reason to pay more to switch systems.
  • Don’t need a foldable: the iPhone 18 Pro is $1,199; see our 18 Pro vs. 17 Pro guide.
